How billing works
How much does it cost to hire a lawyer in Portugal?
Portuguese firms generally use a fixed fee for a defined immigration application, an hourly rate for open-ended advice, or a staged fee when a matter may proceed from an application to an administrative response or court action. Cost rises with the number of applicants, document complexity, source-of-funds work, urgency, and whether the matter is already delayed or disputed.
The services on this page use fixed professional fees for the listed scope. Extra work is agreed separately in writing. The professional fee is not calculated as a percentage of a fund investment or other financial product.
For US applicants
Is it easy for an American to immigrate to Portugal?
It is workable, but the best route depends on how you earn, invest, and plan to live.
Americans commonly use the D7 for qualifying recurring income, the D8 for remote work, the D2 for business activity, family reunification, or the Golden Visa where a qualifying investment and low physical-stay requirement fit the plan. D-visa routes normally begin through a Portuguese consulate and lead to an AIMA residence stage. Golden Visa preparation can often be handled largely at a distance before biometrics.
Allow time for consular availability, document validity, apostilles, and AIMA processing. AIMA backlogs make a year or more a sensible planning assumption for some full residence processes, not a promised timeline.
US tax planning sits in a separate lane. FATCA reporting and, for many Portuguese funds, PFIC analysis can matter before capital moves. Zoark does not provide US tax advice; use a qualified US adviser alongside Portuguese counsel.
Nationality law in 2026
What is the 10 year rule in Portugal?
Under the nationality law now in force, most nationals outside the EU and CPLP, including Americans, generally need ten years of legal residence before applying for Portuguese nationality. EU and CPLP nationals generally need seven years. For other nationals, qualifying residence periods can be added together within a 12-year window.
The old approach that credited time waiting for the first residence permit is no longer the general rule. Applications already pending when the 2026 law took effect may remain under the previous law. Nationality eligibility is fact-specific, so the responsible Portuguese lawyer should confirm how the current consolidated law and transitional rules apply to your residence history.
From call to card
How the process works
A named lawyer, a written scope, and a clear split between legal and third-party work.
- Book the first call.
Discuss your objective, nationality, family, income or investment, and timing.
- Confirm the route and scope.
You receive a written scope naming the responsible Portuguese lawyer and fees.
- Build the document plan.
The lawyer confirms the current checklist, validity windows, translations, and apostilles.
- Complete route setup.
This may include a NIF, banking, accommodation, company, or qualifying investment.
- Prepare and file.
The lawyer reviews the legal file and handles the applicable consular, registry, or AIMA work.
- Respond if needed.
Additional evidence, audiência prévia, or delay action is scoped and priced separately.
- Attend in person.
Complete any consular interview or AIMA biometrics required for the route.
- Receive and maintain status.
After a successful decision, track the residence card, stay rules, and renewal dates.
AIMA controls its processing and appointment timetable. Backlogs remain material, so no approval date, appointment date, or outcome is promised.
